The Autonomy and Responsibilities of the Citizen

I am interested in exploring the concept of freedom and duties from the perspective of citizens of ancient and modern cultures. In order to compare our views to those of the ancients I plan to review major legislation and litigation from the United States that expresses what rights and responsibilities we consider to be integral to citizenship. This will include our US Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence as well as major case law, and will address concepts like freedom of speech, right to privacy, separation of church and state, and the requirements to be considered a citizen. I will then review ancient sources to compare their opinions on these topics, especially in Athenian Democracy and the Roman Republic.
